Your family guide
“Secret passageways, film miniatures and a funicular to a basilica. Vieux Lyon does history differently.”
— San & Jo
Vieux Lyon is one of those rare places that genuinely feels like stepping into another century. Tucked between the Saône River and the slopes of Fourvière Hill, this UNESCO World Heritage neighbourhood is packed with Renaissance buildings, hidden traboule passageways, and a funicular that whisks you up to a hilltop basilica with sweeping views over the city. For families, it is a dream to explore: the streets are pedestrian-friendly, the distances are walkable, and there is something around every corner to spark a child's imagination.
The neighbourhood sits in Lyon's 5th arrondissement and spans 24 hectares of narrow, pastel-painted streets lined with Italian-style galleries and colourful facades. It was once the beating heart of Europe's silk industry, and that rich history is woven into everything you see here, from the weaving looms at Brochier Soieries to the stories of Resistance fighters who used the traboules to move unseen during World War II. History feels alive in Vieux Lyon, not dusty or distant.
Whether your family loves quirky museums, Roman theatres, incredible food, or simply wandering and getting a little lost, Vieux Lyon delivers. Pack comfortable shoes because the streets are almost entirely paved cobblestones, and get ready for a neighbourhood that rewards curiosity at every turn.
Best things to do
Hunt for traboules
Vieux Lyon's traboules are hidden passageways that cut straight through buildings, connecting one street to another. There are around 300 hidden across the old city, and discovering them feels like cracking a secret code. The most famous one starts at 54 Rue Saint-Jean and winds through four buildings before emerging at 27 Rue du Boeuf. Kids absolutely love the mystery of it.
Musée Cinéma et Miniature
This is one of the most genuinely surprising museums in Europe. It combines incredible film set recreations and props with an extraordinary collection of miniatures so detailed they are almost impossible to believe. It is one of those places where you will catch yourself saying 'how did they make that?' every five minutes. A real highlight for curious families.
Ride the funicular to Fourvière
The funicular departs right from the Vieux Lyon metro station and climbs up to the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière, which sits dramatically on the hilltop above the neighbourhood. The views over Vieux Lyon and the city are spectacular, and the basilica itself is ornate and impressive. Kids enjoy the ride as much as the destination.
Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste
This 12th-century cathedral anchors the heart of Vieux Lyon and is well worth stepping inside. The stained-glass windows are beautiful, but the real showstopper for kids is the 16th-century astronomical clock, which still chimes and moves its figures at certain hours of the day. Check the schedule before you visit so you can time it right.
Ancient Theatre of Fourvière
Built around 15 BC when Lyon was known as Lugdunum, this Roman theatre once held 10,000 spectators and remains remarkably well preserved. It is a genuinely awe-inspiring place to stand with your family and imagine what life looked like two thousand years ago. The theatre still hosts performances today, so check whether any events coincide with your visit.
Stroll the Jardin du Rosaire
Tucked into the slopes of Fourvière Hill, the Jardin du Rosaire is a lovely terraced garden accessible on foot from Vieux Lyon. It is a peaceful spot to let younger children run around and take a breather from the cobblestone streets. The garden connects the lower city to the hilltop and offers lovely views along the way.
See silkworms at Brochier Soieries
On Rue du Boeuf you will find Brochier Soieries, a working silk shop where you can see silkworms and historic weaving looms up close. Lyon's silk industry shaped the entire neighbourhood, and this is one of the most tangible ways to connect your family to that history. It is a small but genuinely fascinating stop, especially for curious older children.
Our verdict
Kids
Traboule hunting, funicular rides, a film museum, and Roman ruins give children plenty to engage with. The pedestrian streets make it easy to explore without worrying about traffic.
Culture
One of France's richest historic neighbourhoods. UNESCO status, Renaissance architecture, Roman theatres, and silk heritage all in one compact area. It is exceptional.
Food
Traditional Lyonnaise bouchons are hearty and atmospheric. Some dishes are adventurous for younger palates, but most restaurants cater well to families with varied tastes.
Nature
The Jardin du Rosaire and Fourvière Hill add some greenery, but Vieux Lyon is primarily an urban, historic neighbourhood rather than a nature destination.
Budget
Museum entry, restaurant meals, and funicular tickets add up. That said, traboule hunting and wandering the streets cost nothing, so you can balance paid and free experiences easily.

Fun facts
Resistance fighters used the traboules
During World War II, members of the French Resistance used Vieux Lyon's hidden traboule passageways to move through the city without being seen. What feels like a fun game of hide and seek today was once a matter of life and death.
A Roman city sat here 2,000 years ago
When the Romans built their theatre on Fourvière Hill around 15 BC, Lyon was called Lugdunum and was one of the most important cities in the entire Roman Empire. The theatre seated 10,000 people and still stands today.
Lyon was once the silk capital of the world
During its Golden Age, Vieux Lyon was the centre of Europe's silk trade. The weavers who lived and worked here were called canuts, and they used the traboules to carry their delicate silk fabrics through the streets without getting them wet in the rain.
