Your family guide
“Watch kids stop mid-run on a flower-draped bridge, distracted by swans below and Alpine peaks reflected in water so clear you see the lake bed.”
— San & Jo
Annecy is one of those places that stops families in their tracks. Pastel-coloured buildings line cobblestone streets, flower-draped bridges cross sparkling canals, and the Alps rise dramatically in the background. It is easy to see why people call it the Venice of the Alps, and why the town draws repeat visits.
The old town is compact, pedestrian-friendly, and completely manageable with kids in tow. You can wander from a medieval castle to a lakeside beach in under twenty minutes, stopping for cheese and fresh bread at the market along the way. Annecy has that rare quality of feeling both lively and relaxed at the same time.
Lake Annecy is the real showstopper for families. It is one of the cleanest lakes in Europe, fed by Alpine snowmelt, and perfect for swimming, paddleboarding, or simply sitting on the shore while the kids splash around. Pair that with the historic old town and the hilltop château, and you have a destination that offers something for parents and children alike.
Best things to do
Palais de l'Île
This 12th-century fortress sits on a tiny island right in the middle of the Thiou River, and it is one of the most photographed spots in all of France. Over the centuries it has been a prison, a mint, a courthouse, and an administrative building. Today it houses an Architecture and Heritage Interpretation Centre. Kids love the drama of a building floating on a river, and the history is genuinely fascinating.
Château d'Annecy
Perched on a hilltop just a short walk from the old town, the Château d'Annecy rewards the climb with sweeping views over the rooftops and the lake beyond. Inside, the museum covers medieval sculpture, art, underwater archaeology, and Alpine landscape paintings. It is a genuinely interesting visit, not just a pretty exterior.
Lake Annecy
France's third-largest lake is fed by Alpine snowmelt and is renowned as one of Europe's cleanest. Your family can swim from the public beaches, rent a paddleboard or catamaran, explore by bike on the dedicated path around the perimeter, or simply find a grassy spot and enjoy the view. It is the kind of place where a planned hour turns into a full afternoon.
Vieille Ville (Old Town)
Annecy's old town is a joy to explore on foot. Cobblestone streets wind between 16th- and 17th-century pastel buildings, arched bridges are draped in flowers, and narrow pedestrianised passages invite you to keep going just a little further. There is no single must-do here: the experience is the wandering itself.
Pont des Amours
This charming metal footbridge, built in 1907, offers views of the Annecy Canal on one side and Lake Annecy with the Alps on the other. Local legend says couples who kiss in the middle of the bridge will stay together for life. Kids often find this either wonderfully romantic or completely ridiculous: either reaction makes for a great memory.
Annecy Cathedral (Cathédrale Saint-Pierre)
Dating to the 16th century, this cathedral blends Gothic and Renaissance styles in a way that makes it genuinely distinctive. What makes it extra special is that the Thiou Canal runs directly underneath the building: a detail that delights kids and adults alike. It is a quick visit but a memorable one.
The Lake Cycling Greenway
A former railway tunnel connecting Annecy to Faverges has been converted into a dedicated cycling path, forming part of one of France's most scenic greenways along the lake. The flat sections near Annecy are ideal for families with younger children, while older kids can tackle longer stretches. Bike rentals are easy to find in town.
