Your family guide
“Clear water, a 42 km cycle loop and Savoyard cuisine. Lake Annecy does the French Alps well for families.”
— San & Jo
Lake Annecy is one of those places that genuinely lives up to the hype. Tucked into the French Alps at 447 metres above sea level, it offers your family something rare: a destination where stunning nature, a charming historic town, and a sparkling clean lake all come together in one place. The water is so clear and blue it barely looks real, and the Alpine peaks rising around it make every view feel like a postcard.
Known as the 'Venice of the Alps', Annecy's Old Town is a maze of pastel-coloured buildings, cobbled streets, and canals fed by the River Thiou. Children enjoy exploring the bridges and watching the water flow beneath them, whilst parents can relax over a coffee or a scoop of local ice cream. A short walk uphill takes you to the Château d'Annecy, with rooftop views that are absolutely worth the climb.
What makes Lake Annecy so special for families is how much variety it packs into a small area. You can swim in the lake in the morning, cycle part of the 42 km greenway loop in the afternoon, and sit down to a hearty Savoyard fondue in the evening. Summer is the busiest and most beach-friendly season, but spring and autumn are quieter and brilliant for hiking and cycling without the crowds.
Best things to do
Cycle the lake loop
The Voie Verte du lac d'Annecy is one of France's oldest greenways and circles the entire lake over 42 km, passing beaches, gardens, and pretty villages. You don't have to do it all at once. Even a short stretch with the kids is a joy, and around 10 km of the route is wheelchair and pushchair accessible.
Swim and play on the lake beaches
Europe's cleanest lake is practically made for a family swim. The water is crystal clear, calm, and safe, with sandy beaches dotted around the shoreline. The Plage d'Annecy-le-Vieux and the Plage des Marquisats are popular spots close to town, with shallow entry points that work well for younger children.
Take a boat tour of the lake
A 1 to 2 hour boat tour gives your family a completely different perspective on the lake and its surrounding Alpine peaks. It's a relaxed way to see the shoreline villages, including the charming port of Talloires on the eastern shore, without needing to drive or cycle.
Explore the Old Town and Château d'Annecy
Annecy's Vieille Ville is genuinely lovely to wander with kids. The pastel buildings, cobbled lanes, and canals are picturesque without being overwhelming, and the Château sits on the hill above with a museum inside covering art, underwater archaeology, and medieval sculpture. The views from the top over the town's rooftops are fantastic.
Walk across the Pont des Amours
Built in 1907, the Lovers' Bridge connects the Jardins de l'Europe with the Jacquet Promenade and offers gorgeous views of the lake and mountains. Local legend says couples who kiss in the middle will stay together forever. It's a sweet spot for a family photo, and the gardens alongside are perfect for a picnic or a post-lunch stroll.
Discover the village of Talloires
The village of Talloires sits on the eastern shore in an idyllic spot between the lake and the mountain slopes. Its small harbour is charming, the pace is slower than Annecy town, and the setting is stunning. Accessible by boat from Annecy, which makes the journey part of the fun.
Try water sports on the lake
The combination of clean water and the Alpine winds funnelled by Mont Veyrier and Mont Semnoz creates ideal conditions for water sports. Paddleboarding and kayaking are great options for families, while older kids and teens can try waterskiing, wakeboarding, or wake surfing. Rental and lesson providers are easy to find around the lake.

Fun facts

Kiss on the bridge, stay together forever
Local legend says that couples who kiss in the middle of the Pont des Amours, built in 1907, will stay together forever. The bridge is covered in love locks and is one of the most photographed spots in Annecy.
Prehistoric villages under the water
The shores of Lake Annecy are home to UNESCO-listed prehistoric pile dwelling sites, meaning ancient communities once built their homes on stilts over the water. Some of these sites date back thousands of years and are still being studied by archaeologists today.
