Vancouver with kids: Stanley Park, Science World and mountains

β€œMountains, sea and Stanley Park in one place. Vancouver does city life and nature better than most.”

β€” San & Jo

Vancouver is one of those rare cities that works brilliantly for families. The mountains are right there on the horizon, the ocean is at your feet, and the city itself is packed with things to see, eat, and explore. Whether you're travelling with kids who love wildlife, science, forests, or just really good food, Vancouver has plenty to keep everyone engaged.

What makes Vancouver special is how effortlessly it blends the urban and the outdoors. In the morning you can walk through ancient rainforest in Stanley Park. By afternoon you can be browsing a bustling market on Granville Island or watching grizzly bears on Grouse Mountain. The city has a relaxed, West Coast energy that makes it easy to slow down and actually enjoy your trip rather than rushing from one attraction to the next.

Vancouver is also one of the most multicultural cities in North America, and you'll notice that in every neighbourhood you visit. From Chinatown to Gastown to Yaletown, each part of the city has its own personality. And the food scene reflects all of it, from fresh Pacific salmon and spot prawns to dim sum, Japanese Aburi sushi, and classic Canadian Nanaimo bars.

Best things to do

Best things to do in Vancouver

Stanley Park

Over 1,000 acres of ancient rainforest right in the city. Walk or cycle the Seawall, spot the totem poles, visit the Vancouver Aquarium, and let the kids ride the miniature steam train. The Lost Lagoon and Prospect Point views of Lions Gate Bridge are genuinely breathtaking.

Rent bikes at the park entrance for the easiest Seawall loop with kids
Half day to full day

Capilano Suspension Bridge Park

A 460-foot bridge swaying 230 feet above the river, plus a Treetops Adventure walk through the rainforest canopy and a Cliffwalk along the granite cliff face. It is dramatic and thrilling for kids of all ages, and the surrounding rainforest is genuinely stunning.

Go early in the morning to beat the crowds and get the best photos on the bridge
1.5 to 2 hours

Science World

Housed in a striking geodesic dome on the waterfront, Science World is packed with hands-on exhibits that make learning feel like play. The OMNIMAX theatre is a highlight, and there is always something new to discover across the different exhibit galleries.

Check the OMNIMAX film schedule before you go and book your time slot in advance
2 to 3 hours

Granville Island Public Market

A former industrial area transformed into one of the best markets in North America. Fresh seafood, local produce, artisan food stalls, and plenty of snacks to keep the kids happy. The kid-friendly areas and buskers make it a genuinely fun outing rather than just a shopping stop.

Grab a fresh bagel or a crepe from one of the stalls and eat by the water
1 to 2 hours

Grouse Mountain

Take the gondola up for panoramic views over Vancouver and the Pacific. The grizzly bear refuge lets your family observe real grizzlies up close, and the lumberjack shows are a big hit with kids. In winter it becomes a ski area, and in summer the hiking trails are excellent.

The grizzly bear feeding times are posted at the refuge, plan your visit around them
Half day

Lynn Canyon Suspension Bridge

A quieter, free alternative to Capilano that most tourists miss. The bridge stretches 50 metres above a gorge with waterfalls and deep pools below. The surrounding canyon park has beautiful forest trails that are easy enough for younger kids to manage.

This one is free to visit, making it a great option if you want to save budget for other activities
1 to 2 hours

Gastown and Canada Place

Wander the cobblestone streets of Gastown, Vancouver's oldest neighbourhood, and find the famous steam clock on Water Street. Then head to Canada Place on the waterfront to see the Olympic Cauldron from the 2010 Winter Games and take in the mountain and ocean views.

The steam clock goes off every quarter hour, time your visit so the kids can see it in action
2 to 3 hours

Fun facts

Things to know about Vancouver

The world's narrowest building is here

In Vancouver's Chinatown, the Sam Kee Building holds a Guinness World Record as the narrowest commercial building on the planet, at just six feet wide. It is easy to walk past without noticing, which makes it a fun urban treasure hunt with kids.

Vancouver is Hollywood's secret stand-in

Vancouver is nicknamed Hollywood North because so many major films and TV shows are filmed here. The city has stood in for New York, Seattle, and dozens of fictional cities. Keep an eye out for film crews when you are exploring the streets.
