Your family guide
βFrom limestone quarry to flower garden. Jennie Butchart's project still draws over a million visitors each year.β
β San & Jo
Butchart Gardens is the kind of place that stops you mid-step. Tucked into Brentwood Bay on Vancouver Island, this 55-acre National Historic Site transforms what was once an industrial limestone quarry into a jaw-dropping world of colour, fragrance, and wonder. Over a million visitors come every year, and once you arrive, it is easy to understand why.
What makes it so special for families is that it changes with every season. Spring brings over 300,000 tulips and daffodils. Summer fills the Rose Garden with hundreds of scented varieties arching overhead. Autumn sets the Japanese Garden ablaze with russet and gold. And in winter, the Christmas event turns the whole site into a glittering, carol-filled wonderland. There is genuinely no bad time to visit.
The gardens are well set up for a relaxed family day out. Wide winding paths connect themed garden areas, there is on-site dining in a historic family residence, a hand-carved carousel for younger kids, and Saturday evening fireworks in summer. Plan for at least half a day, and you will leave wishing you had stayed longer.
Best things to do
The Sunken Garden
This is the dramatic heart of the whole site. The former limestone quarry has been transformed into a breathtaking bowl of colour, with tiered flowerbeds, cascading water features, and viewpoints from the rim that give you the full picture. It is especially vivid in spring and summer when the blooms are at their peak.
The Rose Garden
Hundreds of rose varieties line the paths beneath 30 arching frames, filling the air with scent from summer through early autumn. It is one of those rare spots where even reluctant sightseers slow down and genuinely enjoy themselves. Kids love spotting the different colours and shapes.
The Japanese Garden
Serene and beautifully composed, this garden rewards a slow wander at any time of year. In autumn it becomes truly spectacular, with maples turning deep russet, gold, and red. It is a calming contrast to the busier areas of the site and a lovely spot for a quiet moment with your family.
The Italian Garden
Built on the site of the Butchart family's former tennis courts, this formal garden features a graceful statue of Mercury and a small reflecting pond. It has a quieter, more elegant feel than the rest of the gardens and gives older kids and teens an interesting bit of history to explore.
The Dragon Fountain and Ross Fountain
Two of the gardens' most photogenic features. The Dragon Fountain, just past the Sunken Garden toward the ocean, features dragons spewing water into a large basin and is a guaranteed hit with kids. The Ross Fountain, installed in 1964 to celebrate the gardens' 60th anniversary, puts on an impressive display in the lower reservoir.
The Rose Carousel
Located in the Children's Pavilion, this hand-carved wooden carousel features basswood animals and is a genuine delight for younger visitors. A portion of every ride goes to a local children's charity, which makes it feel even better. It is a sweet, unhurried addition to your visit.
Magic of Christmas
If you can visit in winter, the Christmas event transforms the entire gardens into a festive spectacle. Extensive lighting displays, traditional carollers, and festive brass performances fill the site with warmth and atmosphere. It is one of the most memorable family Christmas experiences on Vancouver Island.
Saturday Evening Fireworks
During July and August, the gardens host Saturday evening fireworks displays that light up the sky above the Sunken Garden. It is a brilliant way to end a full day on site, and the atmosphere is genuinely special. Bring a blanket and find a good spot on the lawn well before the show starts.

A National Historic Site with a fascinating origin story, stunning architecture, totem poles, and over a century of living horticultural art.

On-site dining is genuinely good, with locally sourced Vancouver Island ingredients and options ranging from casual to Afternoon Tea. Gelato on site too.
Nature
Beautifully curated rather than wild, but the seasonal displays, mature trees, ponds, and streams make for an immersive natural experience.
Budget
Entry is a premium experience, and dining and shopping add up. That said, the sheer scale and quality of what is on offer makes it worth the spend for most families.

Did you know?
It started as a quarry
In 1904, Jennie Butchart looked at her husband's exhausted limestone quarry and decided to turn it into a garden. She reportedly had soil brought in by horse and cart and lowered herself down the quarry walls in a bosun's chair to plant ivy. That determination created what you see today.
Over a million visitors every year
Butchart Gardens attracts more than one million visitors annually and is maintained by around 50 dedicated gardeners. In spring alone, over 300,000 tulips and daffodils are planted across the grounds. There is even an annual flower count held every February.
One chimney still stands
Among all the beauty, a single original chimney from the former cement works still stands in the gardens as a quiet reminder of the industrial history of the site. It is easy to walk past without noticing it, but once you know it is there, it adds a whole new layer to the story.
