Your family guide
“Storm surge barriers the size of the Eiffel Tower, laid on their side. The Delta Works make engineering feel enormous.”
— San & Jo
Neeltje Jans is one of those rare places where your children will actually want to learn something. Sitting right inside the Oosterscheldekering, the world's largest storm surge barrier, this artificial island in Zeeland is the main gateway to the Delta Works. These are the flood defences the Netherlands built after the catastrophic 1953 North Sea flood, and they are recognised globally as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World.
Deltapark Neeltje Jans turns that extraordinary engineering story into a full day out for families. There is an aquarium, a water playground with an 8-metre windmill, a whale-shaped pavilion, children's playgrounds, and immersive exhibits that recreate the 1953 flood in a way that genuinely gives you goosebumps. Guided tours take you right up close to the massive sea gates of the Oosterscheldekering, and seasonal boat trips let you see the barrier from the water.
Beyond the park, the island is surrounded by dunes, wide beaches, and bird breeding colonies, making it a surprisingly peaceful spot for a coastal walk after all the excitement. Whether families love big engineering, wildlife, or simply splashing around near the sea, Neeltje Jans covers considerable ground.
Best things to do
Flood simulation and Delta Works exhibits
The indoor exhibitions at Deltapark Neeltje Jans bring the 1953 North Sea flood to life through original footage, dramatic simulations, and hands-on displays. It is emotional, educational, and surprisingly gripping for children and adults alike.
Guided tour of the Oosterscheldekering
This is the highlight for many families. Exclusive guided tours take you around and inside the Oosterscheldekering, the largest barrier in the Delta Works, for a close-up look at its enormous sea gates and the engineering genius behind them.
Aquarium and Whale World Expo
The on-site aquarium showcases the sea life of the Eastern Scheldt, while the Whale World Expo is housed in a pavilion shaped like a whale. Both are well-suited for curious kids who want to know what lives beneath the waves around the barrier.
Water playground and playgrounds
The water playground, marked by its 8-metre windmill, is a favourite with younger children. There are also traditional playgrounds dotted around the park, so little ones can burn off energy between the more educational stops.
Seasonal boat trips around the barrier
From Neeltje Jans, you can join a boat trip to see the Oosterscheldekering from the water. Seeing the scale of the barrier from sea level is a completely different experience and gives a real sense of just how massive this structure is.
Dune walks and birdwatching on the island
The beaches and dunes surrounding Neeltje Jans are home to bird breeding colonies, making this a genuinely rewarding spot for birdwatching in Zeeland. A walk along the dunes also gives you panoramic views of the storm surge barrier stretching across the water.
Our verdict
Kids
The mix of interactive exhibits, a water playground, an aquarium, and guided tours keeps children of all ages genuinely engaged for a full day.
Culture
The Delta Works story is one of the most remarkable engineering achievements in history, and Deltapark tells it in a way that sticks with you long after you leave.
Food
On-site dining is limited to the park restaurant, which specialises in Zeeland seafood. It is good quality, but options are limited if your family is not into mussels.
Nature
Dunes, wide beaches, and bird breeding colonies make the island surprisingly rich in natural character, especially for a spot built around an engineering landmark.
Budget
Park entry and guided tours add up for a family, but the full-day value is solid. Check the official website for current ticket prices before you visit.

Fun facts
One of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World
The Delta Works is officially recognised as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers. Your family is visiting something that engineers around the globe consider a once-in-a-generation achievement.
Neeltje Jans is an artificial island built inside a barrier
The island was not there before the Delta Works. It was created during construction as a working base for the project and now sits right in the middle of the Oosterscheldekering, surrounded by the North Sea on one side and the Eastern Scheldt on the other.
One flood changed everything
The 1953 North Sea flood killed more than 1,800 people in the Netherlands and flooded over 150,000 hectares of land. That single disaster prompted the Dutch to build the entire Delta Works system, one of the most ambitious construction projects ever undertaken.
