“Climb the Abdijtoren and you can see across the entire province from the top; your kids will spot the next town before you do.”
— San & Jo
Middelburg is one of those places that feels like it was designed for curious families. The capital of Zeeland province, it packs Gothic towers, medieval abbeys, canal-side streets, and cobblestone alleys into a centre so compact you can walk the whole thing in an afternoon. And yet somehow, it never feels rushed.
The city has a fascinating story behind its beauty. Much of what you see today was painstakingly rebuilt after significant WWII damage, making Middelburg one of the finest examples of post-war architectural restoration in the Netherlands. Your kids might not know that history yet, but they will feel the care that went into every brick. The Abdijtoren De Lange Jan towers over everything at 90.5 metres, visible from virtually every corner of the city, and climbing it is one of those experiences your family will talk about for years.
Beyond the big landmarks, Middelburg rewards slow exploration. Hidden courtyards tucked behind main streets, antique shops, independent bookshops, a lively Saturday market, and a miniature park for younger visitors all add up to a destination with real depth. And if your family needs a beach break, the coast is just about 4 miles away.
Best things to do
Climb De Lange Jan tower
At 90.5 metres, the Abbey Tower is Middelburg's most iconic landmark and the views from the top are genuinely breathtaking. Climbing the medieval spiral staircase is an adventure in itself, and spotting the city's rooftops and surrounding Zeeland countryside from above gives your family a whole new perspective on this little city.
Explore the Zeeuws Museum
Set inside the medieval Abbey complex, the Zeeuws Museum brings Zeeland's cultural history to life through art, artefacts, and exhibits. The building itself is worth visiting, and the museum does a good job of making regional history feel relevant and engaging for younger visitors too.
Visit the Vleeshal contemporary art centre
Housed in a beautifully restored former meat hall right on the Markt square, the Vleeshal hosts rotating exhibitions of local and international contemporary art. It is a surprisingly accessible space, and the contrast between the historic building and the modern art inside is genuinely striking.
Admire the Stadhuys on the Markt
Middelburg's Gothic Town Hall dates from 1520 and is one of the most photogenic buildings in all of Zeeland. With its turrets, ornate facade, and distinctive red-and-white shutters, it stops visitors in their tracks. It is still used for weddings today, so you might even catch a celebration.
Take a canal cruise
Seeing Middelburg from the water is a completely different experience. Canal cruises give your family a relaxed way to take in the historic architecture and waterways without covering any ground on foot. Younger children especially love it, and it is a natural break in the middle of a busy day of exploring.
Discover Mini Mundi miniature park
Mini Mundi features detailed miniature replicas of Walcheren landmarks alongside global sites, and it is a genuine hit with children of all ages. It is the kind of attraction that gets everyone crouching down to look more closely, which is always a good sign.
Wander Kuiperspoort and the hidden hofjes
Kuiperspoort is one of Middelburg's most photogenic spots, with former coopers' houses lining a quiet canal that takes you straight back to the city's trading heyday. Combine it with a wander through the hidden courtyards (hofjes) tucked behind the main streets for a side of Middelburg that most visitors miss.

Fun facts
Rebuilt brick by brick
Middelburg's beautiful historic centre was largely destroyed during WWII, but the city spent decades painstakingly rebuilding it to look exactly as it had before. What looks centuries old was often reconstructed within living memory, making it one of the most remarkable restoration stories in the Netherlands.
Long Jan really is long
The Abbey Tower known as De Lange Jan, or Long John, stands 90.5 metres tall. That is roughly the same height as a 30-storey building. It has been the tallest landmark in Middelburg since the medieval period, and on a clear day you can see all the way to the Zeeland coast from the top.
Salty sheep make tastier lamb
The pré-salé lamb served in Middelburg's restaurants comes from sheep that graze on the salty coastal meadows of Noord-Beveland. The salt in the grass gives the meat a distinctive, naturally seasoned flavour that you simply cannot replicate anywhere else. It is one of those things that sounds odd but tastes incredible.
