Ameland
Ameland is a Wadden Island in the Netherlands with white beaches, dune forests, seal safaris, and a car-light environment perfect for families who want to slow down.

Texel is the Netherlands' largest Wadden island, packed with beaches, dunes, seals, sheep, and brilliant local food. A perfect family escape into nature.
Your family guide
“Cycle across the entire island before lunch, then watch your kids spot seals at Ecomare and sleep deeply from salt air and sand.”
— San & Jo
Texel is the largest of the Dutch Wadden Islands, and it genuinely feels like a world apart from the mainland. Here you'll find wide sandy beaches, ancient dunes, dense forests, and fields full of sheep: all on one island you can cycle across in a day. It's the kind of place where children run ahead on the beach and you actually feel like you can breathe.
The island sits within the UNESCO-recognised Wadden Sea ecosystem, which means the nature here is seriously special. From rescued seals at Ecomare to birdwatching in the Dunes of Texel National Park, there is always something wild and wonderful happening just outside your door. And because the island is only about 25 kilometres long, everything feels manageable: even with little ones in tow.
Texel is not a theme-park kind of destination. It rewards families who love being outdoors, exploring at their own pace, and eating really well. The local food scene is built around honest island produce: fresh seafood, lamb raised on salty pastures, sheep's cheese, and artisan ice cream made from Texel cow's milk. Come here for a slower, richer kind of family holiday.
Best things to do
Ecomare seal rescue centre and aquarium
This is the highlight for most families visiting Texel. Ecomare is a seal rescue centre and aquarium set right inside the Dunes of Texel National Park. You can watch rescued seals up close, visit the bird sanctuary, and explore aquariums with sharks and local North Sea life. It is genuinely moving to see the seal pups being cared for, and kids of all ages find it fascinating.
Climb the Texel Lighthouse
Built in 1864 to prevent shipwrecks, the Eierland Lighthouse stands 35 metres tall at the northern tip of the island. Climbing the 118 steps rewards your family with sweeping views over the dunes, beaches, and the open North Sea. The walk through the dunes to reach it is half the fun.
Kaap Skil maritime museum in Oudeschild
Texel has a rich history of shipwrecks, fishing, and beachcombing, and Kaap Skil tells that story brilliantly. The museum in the village of Oudeschild is full of treasures pulled from the sea over the centuries. Kids love the hands-on displays and the sheer variety of objects found washed ashore.
Schapenboerderij sheep farm
Texel is famously the sheep island, and a visit to Schapenboerderij Texel brings that to life. The farm is home to 25 breeds of sheep, as well as goats and ponies, and hosts sheepdog demonstrations that kids absolutely love. It is hands-on, friendly, and very Texel.
Cycling through the Dunes of Texel National Park
The best way to explore Texel is by bike, and the national park has dedicated cycling paths that wind through dunes, forests, and open heathland. The island is flat enough for younger riders, and the scenery changes constantly. You can cycle from beach to forest to village in a single morning.
Birdwatching across the island
Texel is one of the most important birdwatching destinations in the Netherlands, with over 300 species recorded on the island. The dunes, wetlands, and coastal areas provide habitat for an extraordinary variety of birds throughout the year. Even families who have never tried birdwatching often get completely hooked here.
Seal boat tour from Oudeschild harbour
Oudeschild harbour is the departure point for seal watching boat tours, where you can spot wild seals resting on sandbanks in the Wadden Sea. It's a brilliant experience for children, and the guides are knowledgeable about the local ecosystem. Book ahead in peak season.
Our verdict
Kids
Between the seal centre, sheep farm, beaches, and cycling paths, kids are genuinely well catered for here. The pace is relaxed and the outdoors does most of the heavy lifting.
Nature
Texel is exceptional for nature. A UNESCO-recognised ecosystem, a national park, 300 bird species, wild seals, and pristine dunes. This is what the island is all about.
Food
The local food scene is genuinely special. Fresh seafood, Texel lamb, sheep's cheese, artisan ice cream, and local beer and gin. It rewards curious eaters.
Culture
Two good museums and a strong sense of island identity make Texel culturally interesting, though it is primarily a nature destination rather than a cultural one.
Budget
Texel is a popular Dutch holiday destination and prices reflect that, especially in summer. It is mid-range to premium, but good-value family options exist if you plan ahead.

Quick visit
A day trip covers Ecomare and one beach, but you will feel rushed and wish you had stayed longer.

Sweet spot
Three days lets your family explore the national park, visit the key sites, cycle the island, and actually slow down. This is how most families experience Texel at its best.

Full island immersion
Five days or more suits families who want to settle in, explore every village, do multiple cycling routes, and really live the island rhythm.
Fun facts
More sheep than people
Texel is nicknamed the sheep island for good reason. The island has more sheep than human residents, and they roam freely across the dunes and fields. The Texel sheep breed is actually famous worldwide and is exported to farms across the globe.
A lighthouse built to stop disasters
The Eierland Lighthouse was built in 1864 after dozens of ships wrecked on the treacherous sandbanks at the northern tip of Texel. Before it was built, the area was one of the most dangerous stretches of coastline in the Netherlands.
One island, 300 bird species
Texel is one of the most important birdwatching spots in all of Europe. Over 300 different bird species have been recorded on the island, thanks to the extraordinary variety of habitats packed into just 25 kilometres of land.
Taste Texel

Must tryVarious restaurants across the island
The island's most celebrated dish. Texel sheep graze on salty sea air and diverse island vegetation, which gives the lamb a distinctive, rich flavour unlike anything you will find on the mainland. Look for it on menus across the island.

Artisan ice cream from Labora
Kids love itIjsboerderij Labora
Ice cream farm Labora makes its ice cream from fresh milk and cream produced by Texel cows. The flavours are seasonal and the quality is outstanding. This is the kind of ice cream stop that becomes a daily ritual for families staying on the island.
Fresh mussels and oysters
Local favouriteOudeschild harbour seafood stalls
Caught just off the Texel coast, the mussels and oysters here are as fresh as it gets. Oudeschild harbour is the best place to try them, straight from the source. Simple, honest, and genuinely delicious.
Texel sheep's cheese
Safe choiceLocal farm shops and markets
Small island dairies produce a range of sheep's milk cheeses that you will find at farm shops and local markets across Texel. Mild enough for kids and interesting enough for adults, it makes a great picnic addition.
Texels Skuumkoppe beer
Local favouriteTexelse Bierbrouwerij
Brewed by the Texelse Brewery, this local beer has a distinctive salty island character that reflects the environment it comes from. For parents looking to try something local, it is a genuine island original.
