Wild beaches, seals, and mudflat adventures on the Wadden Islands

Island time doesn't require you to leave Europe. The Wadden Islands prove it, twice daily, when the tide vanishes and reveals an entirely new landscape.

— San & Jo

The Wadden Islands are one of those rare places where nature does all the work for you. Five low-lying barrier islands off the northern coast of the Netherlands, each one fringed by wide North Sea beaches, rolling dunes, and a vast tidal sea that reveals a whole new world twice a day. This is the world's largest intertidal system, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one of the most extraordinary family destinations in Europe.

What makes it special for families is how hands-on everything feels. Your kids can hike across exposed mudflats, spot seals basking on sandbanks, cycle through national parks, and watch enormous flocks of migratory birds fill the sky. There are no motorways to cross, no city crowds to navigate. Just wide open space, fresh sea air, and the kind of slow, connected holiday that everyone comes home talking about.

Each island has its own character. Texel is the largest and most varied, with a seal sanctuary, forests, and lighthouses. Vlieland is completely car-free and wonderfully quiet. Terschelling, Ameland, and Schiermonnikoog each have national parks, cycling paths, and hidden villages that reward curious families who like to explore at their own pace.

What makes it special

Why families love the Wadden Islands

A tidal world unlike anything else

Twice a day, the sea retreats and exposes kilometres of mudflats teeming with life. It's one of the most dramatic natural spectacles in Europe, and watching it happen with your children is genuinely special.

Seal spotting from the ferry and beyond

Seals are a highlight for every family visiting the Wadden region. You can spot them on sandbanks during the ferry crossing, and on Texel, Ecomare is a working seal sanctuary where rescued seals are cared for and released.

Cycling made for families

All five islands have extensive, well-maintained cycling routes through dunes, forests, and nature reserves. With low traffic and flat terrain, it is one of the easiest places in the world to explore by bike as a family.

12 million birds and counting

The Wadden Islands are one of the world's most important bird migration stopovers. Every year, around 12 million migratory birds pass through, and watching vast flocks lift off the mudflats is the kind of moment kids remember for years.

Unspoiled nature on every island

Terschelling, Ameland, and Schiermonnikoog each have their own national parks, while Texel's nature reserves cover roughly a third of the island. Salt marshes, polders, ancient dunes, and wide beaches give every day a different feel.

Your kind of holiday

Nature and wildlife explorers

The Wadden Islands are built for families who want real nature, not a theme park version of it. Mudflat hikes, seal watching, birdwatching, and national park cycling make every day feel like a proper expedition.

Beach and dunes slow travel

Wide North Sea beaches, towering dunes, and a laid-back island pace make the Wadden Islands a brilliant choice for families who want to slow down. Vlieland's 19 kilometres of beach and car-free roads are a particular highlight.

Active island hopping

Each island has its own personality, and combining two or three by ferry makes for an adventurous family trip. Cycle the trails, explore the harbours, visit the lighthouses, and discover the hidden villages that make each island feel distinct.

Fun facts

Things to know about The Wadden Islands

The islands were made by storms

The Wadden Islands were not always islands. Around 1200 AD, massive storms broke apart ancient coastal dunes and created the chain of barrier islands you see today. They are still shifting and changing with every tide.

Over 10,000 species call it home

The Wadden Sea ecosystem supports more than 10,000 plant and animal species. Every time the tide goes out, the mudflats become a giant feeding ground for birds, fish, crabs, and all kinds of creatures your kids can discover up close.

You can walk to an island (with a guide)

Wadlopen, guided mudflat hiking, lets you walk across the exposed tidal flats from the mainland towards the islands. It is one of the most iconic experiences in the Netherlands, and something no other destination in the world quite replicates.
