“Theme parks, castles and four national parks. North Brabant gets the balance right.”
— San & Jo
North Brabant is one of those places that sneaks up on you. You come for a theme park or a city break, and before you know it you're cycling through heathlands, spotting windmills, and everyone is arguing over the last worstenbroodje from the bakery. This southern Dutch province has a warmth and a rhythm to it that feels different from the rest of the Netherlands.
The Brabant lifestyle is what locals call Bourgondisch, which roughly translates to Burgundian. Think long lunches, generous portions, and a genuine love of celebrating the good things in life. That spirit is baked into everything here, from the Carnival festivities that take over entire cities each February to the asparagus fields where restaurants serve dinner right among the crops in spring. Food is not just fuel in North Brabant. It is the whole experience.
Beyond the table, the province has an impressive range of things to do with kids. Four national parks, a landscape that inspired Vincent van Gogh, castles, World War II history, and one of the most beloved theme parks in Europe all share space with a flat, cycling-friendly terrain that makes getting around genuinely easy with children. Whether your family loves nature, history, culture, or simply a great meal, North Brabant delivers without the fuss.

What makes it special
A food culture your whole family will love
North Brabant takes eating seriously, and in the best possible way. From flaky Bossche Bollen piled high with cream to soft worstenbroodjes fresh from the bakery, the local food scene is rich, generous, and genuinely kid-friendly. In spring, the ASA season kicks off with asparagus, strawberries, and the region's famous anchovies, caught by hand using traditional fyke nets. Some restaurants even serve meals directly in the asparagus fields.
Castles, history, and stories worth telling
North Brabant has a deep, layered past that comes alive for curious families. Historic castles at Heeze, Heeswijk, and Gemert give kids a real sense of medieval life, while the province's significant World War II liberation heritage adds a moving and important dimension to any visit. The quirky border village of Baarle-Nassau, where Belgian enclaves sit inside Dutch territory, is the kind of place that genuinely baffles and delights children.
Four national parks and endless outdoor space
The flat, open landscape of North Brabant is tailor-made for family adventures. Four national parks offer heathlands, forests, and small lakes to explore, and the thousands of kilometres of cycling and hiking paths make it easy to get out into nature at your own pace. The terrain is gentle enough for young children on bikes, and the scenery, which once inspired Vincent van Gogh, is quietly beautiful in every season.
Efteling, one of Europe's most beloved theme parks
Efteling is not just a theme park. It is a fairy-tale world built with extraordinary care and imagination, and it has been enchanting families for generations. Located right in the heart of North Brabant, it is the kind of place that earns a full day, or two. From the enchanted forest to the rides and seasonal events, it sits comfortably at the top of any North Brabant family itinerary.
Art and culture with genuine depth
North Brabant punches well above its weight culturally. The Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven holds works by Picasso and is one of the Netherlands' leading modern art museums. The province also claims Vincent van Gogh as a native son, and his early life here is woven into the landscape and local museums. Carnival, one of the most exuberant celebrations in the country, transforms cities each February and gives families a vivid taste of Brabant's distinct identity.
Your kind of holiday
A foodie family break
North Brabant is a genuinely exciting destination if your family loves exploring through food. The Burgundian spirit means markets, bakeries, and local restaurants are central to daily life here. Spring brings the celebrated ASA season of asparagus, strawberries, and hand-caught anchovies. Year-round, you can track down worstenbroodjes, Brabant cheese, and the legendary Bossche Bol. It is the kind of place where eating together is the highlight of the day.
A cycling and nature adventure
The flat terrain and extensive network of cycling paths make North Brabant one of the easiest places in Europe to explore by bike with kids. You can pedal between national parks, picturesque villages, and windmills without a hill in sight. The four national parks offer heathlands and forests for walking and wildlife spotting, and the canals and small lakes add a lovely backdrop to any outdoor day.
A history and culture trip
North Brabant has a rich, layered past that rewards curious families. Medieval castles, the unique border village of Baarle-Nassau, World War II liberation sites, and the birthplace of Vincent van Gogh all sit within easy reach. Add in the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven and the living traditions of Carnival, and you have a destination where history and culture feel alive rather than dusty.
Did you know?
The only Dutch anchovies come from here
North Brabant is the only place in the Netherlands where anchovies are caught, and they are harvested using traditional fyke nets by the Van Dort family from Bergen op Zoom. The season runs from May through early June, making them one of the most sought-after seasonal treats in the region.
A village with borders inside borders
Baarle-Nassau is one of the most unusual places in Europe. Belgian enclaves called Baarle-Hertog sit inside Dutch territory, creating a patchwork of borders that runs through streets, shops, and even through the middle of houses. Some front doors technically cross an international border.
Vincent van Gogh grew up here
The painter Vincent van Gogh was born in North Brabant, and the flat heathlands and rural villages of the province shaped his early work. The landscape he walked through as a child later became the quiet, earthy foundation for some of the most recognisable paintings in art history.
Taste North Brabant

Worstenbroodje
A soft, slightly sweet bread roll filled with seasoned minced meat, the worstenbroodje is the defining snack of North Brabant. Originally tied to Carnival and Christmas, you can now find them year-round at local bakeries. They are warm, filling, and universally loved by kids. In 2016, the tradition of making them was recognised as UNESCO intangible world heritage.

Bossche Bol
A large, round choux pastry filled with whipped cream and coated in dark chocolate, the Bossche Bol is one of the great treats of Dutch baking. It is messy, generous, and completely irresistible. You will find the best ones in 's-Hertogenbosch, where they originated.

Brabant asparagus
Every spring, North Brabant celebrates the arrival of white asparagus with real enthusiasm. From April onwards, restaurants across the province feature asparagus menus, and some even serve meals directly in the fields where the crop is grown. It is a genuinely special seasonal experience that older children tend to find fascinating.

ASA season treats
The ASA season, named for Asparagus, Strawberries, and Anchovies, is North Brabant's unofficial spring celebration. Fresh strawberries are sweet and plentiful, and the hand-caught anchovies from Bergen op Zoom are a rare regional delicacy available only from May through early June. Picking up seasonal produce from local markets is a lovely thing to do with kids.

Moorkop
Similar to the Bossche Bol but smaller and topped with a dark chocolate glaze, the Moorkop is another classic Brabant pastry that you'll find in bakeries throughout the province. It's a daily treat that locals enjoy without ceremony, and children almost certainly ask for a second one.
