Your family guide
βA city that turned factory floors into playgrounds for curious minds.β
β San & Jo
Eindhoven is one of those cities that surprises you. You come expecting a quiet Dutch town and you find a buzzing, creative place where old Philips factories have been transformed into street art districts, interactive museums sit inside iconic domes, and kids can cycle through parks without a care in the world. If your family loves discovering how things work, this city will keep everyone genuinely engaged.
What makes Eindhoven so good for families is how compact and walkable it is. The city centre, the Strijp-S creative district, and most of the key museums are all within easy reach of each other. You are not spending half your day on transport. You are actually exploring, snacking on poffertjes, and stumbling across something unexpected around every corner.
Eindhoven sits in the province of North Brabant in the south of the Netherlands, and it has a warmth and energy that feels different from the more tourist-heavy cities in the country. Locals are friendly, the pace is relaxed, and the city genuinely welcomes families. It is a brilliant base for a day trip or a short city break that leaves everyone wanting to come back.
Best things to do
Philips Museum
Housed in the original 1891 factory where Philips first made light bulbs, this museum traces how one small company shaped an entire city. The interactive exhibits are genuinely engaging for curious kids, and the story of how Eindhoven grew around Philips is fascinating for adults too. It is one of those rare museums where everyone in the family gets something out of it.
Evoluon (Next Nature Museum)
This iconic flying-saucer-shaped dome is one of Eindhoven's most recognisable landmarks, and the RetroFuture exhibition inside is a brilliant mix of technology, imagination, and interactive displays. Kids love the futuristic atmosphere, and the building itself is worth seeing from the outside even if you do not go in. A real talking point for the whole family.
Strijp-S creative district
This former Philips industrial complex has been completely reimagined as one of the Netherlands' most exciting creative neighbourhoods. Street art covers the old factory walls, coffee shops pop up in shipping containers, and there is a skate hall for older kids to enjoy. Wander through with no fixed plan and let your family discover it at their own pace.
Van Abbemuseum
A modern art museum with beautiful light-filled architecture and a genuinely playful spirit. The highlight for kids is the singing elevator, which never fails to get a reaction. The collection is thought-provoking and the building itself is stunning. Even if modern art is not usually your family's thing, this museum has a way of drawing you in.
DAF Museum
Eindhoven has a proud automotive history, and the DAF Museum celebrates it with a collection of classic vehicles that kids find surprisingly cool. It is a more relaxed visit than the bigger museums and works well as a half-day option. Petrol-heads in the family will be very happy here.
Van Gogh-Roosegaarde Bicycle Path in Nuenen
Just outside Eindhoven in the village of Nuenen, this glowing bicycle path is inspired by Van Gogh's Starry Night and lights up after dark using solar-powered stones. It is a magical experience for families and completely unlike anything else in the region. Plan to visit in the evening for the full effect, and combine it with a cycle through the surrounding countryside.
St. Catherine's Church
Right in the heart of Eindhoven's city centre, this striking historic church is a lovely contrast to all the modern design and tech culture around it. It is a calm spot to pause during a busy day, and the architecture is genuinely impressive. A quick stop that adds a little historical depth to your visit.

Culture
Eindhoven punches well above its weight culturally. From Philips history to cutting-edge modern art and world-class design events, there is serious depth here for culture-loving families.
Food
North Brabant specialities like the bossche bol and worstenbroodje are genuinely delicious, and the city has a good range of family-friendly restaurants and snack bars to keep everyone happy.
Nature
Eindhoven has pleasant green parks and is well-connected to the surrounding North Brabant countryside, but it is primarily an urban destination rather than a nature escape.
Budget
Eindhoven is more affordable than Amsterdam or Rotterdam. Museum entry is reasonably priced, food is good value, and the city is easy to explore without spending a fortune.

Fun facts
A city built by one company
Eindhoven was a small market town before Philips arrived in 1891. The company grew so fast that it essentially built the modern city around it, including housing, sports facilities, and schools for its workers. Without Philips, Eindhoven as we know it simply would not exist.
A bike path that glows like a painting
Near Eindhoven in the village of Nuenen, there is a bicycle path that lights up after dark using thousands of solar-powered glowing stones. It was inspired by Van Gogh's Starry Night and designed by artist Daan Roosegaarde. Van Gogh himself actually lived in Nuenen for two years.
The factory that became a neighbourhood
Strijp-S was once a top-secret Philips industrial complex so restricted that locals called it the 'Forbidden City'. Today it is one of the Netherlands' most creative urban districts, full of street art, coffee bars, and design studios. The transformation took decades and is still ongoing.
