Kinderdijk with kids: windmills, cycling and Dutch legends

Nineteen windmills, two canals and one legend about a floating cradle. Kinderdijk tells Dutch history properly.

— San & Jo

Kinderdijk is one of those places that feels genuinely timeless. Nineteen historic windmills line two quiet canals in the flat green polders of South Holland, their sails slowly turning against wide open skies. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the Netherlands' most iconic spots, and the good news for your family is that it is also one of the most relaxed and easy to explore.

Unlike the busier corners of the Netherlands, Kinderdijk moves at a slower pace. You can stroll or cycle along the dike paths between the canals, peer inside a working mill, and let the kids roam freely on the open green spaces along the water. There is even a legend behind the name 'Kinderdijk' (children's dike) that the whole family can discover together at the Wisboom Pumping Station, which tells the origin story through a brilliant multiscreen film.

Whether you are looking for a peaceful half-day out or a full day of exploring, Kinderdijk delivers something that feels both educational and genuinely beautiful. It is the kind of place where you find yourself slowing down, taking it all in, and realising your kids are doing exactly the same.

Fun facts

Things to know about Kinderdijk

The oldest mill is nearly 400 years old

The Blokweer mill was built in 1630, which means it has been standing for almost four centuries. That is older than most countries your kids can name.

The polders sit below sea level

Kinderdijk sits in the Alblasserwaard polder, a stretch of land that is actually lower than the sea around it. The windmills pumped water out to stop the whole area from flooding. Without them, this place would be underwater.

A legend gave this place its name

Local legend says that after a great flood, a wooden cradle washed ashore on the dike with a baby and a cat inside, both still alive. The baby's survival gave the dike its name: Kinderdijk, or 'children's dike'.
