Your family guide
“Gouda is like stepping into a Dutch postcard, and the cheese is even better than you imagined.”
— San & Jo
If your family loves the idea of cobbled streets, canal reflections, and eating your way through history, Gouda is going to surprise you. This compact South Holland city is best known worldwide for its namesake cheese and stroopwafels, but there is so much more waiting behind those colourful facades. Think fairytale town halls, Europe's longest church, and a weekly cheese market that feels like it belongs to another century.
What makes Gouda so good for families is how easy it is to navigate. The historic centre is walkable, the highlights are close together, and there is something genuinely hands-on at almost every stop. Kids can taste five varieties of Gouda cheese, watch pancakes made on antique copper griddles, and catch a puppet show on the hour from the town hall carillon. It is the kind of place where history does not feel like a school trip.
Gouda works brilliantly as a day trip from Amsterdam or other major Dutch cities, but it also rewards a slower stay. The canals are peaceful, the cafes are cosy, and the market square is one of the largest in the Netherlands. Once your family has tried fresh stroopwafels straight from the shop, you will understand why people keep coming back.
Best things to do
Gouda Cheese Market on Markt Square
Every Thursday from June to September, Markt Square transforms into a living piece of Dutch history. Traditional cheese traders demonstrate the old weighing and clapping rituals from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. It is loud, colourful, and genuinely fascinating for kids who have never seen a cheese wheel the size of a tyre.
Stadhuis (Town Hall)
Built in 1449, the Gouda Town Hall is the oldest Gothic town hall in the Netherlands and looks like something out of a fairy tale. The hourly carillon puppet show reenacts the city's 1272 charter, which delights younger visitors. Inside, intricate tapestries and historic rooms bring centuries of city life to life.
Sint-Janskerk and the Goudse Glazen
At 123 metres, Sint-Janskerk is the longest church in the Netherlands. Its 72 stained-glass windows, known as the Goudse Glazen, are considered among the finest examples of Renaissance and Gothic stained glass in Europe. On a sunny day, the colours flooding through the nave are genuinely breathtaking, even for kids who are not usually interested in churches.
Gouda Cheese Experience
Located at Agnietenstraat 21, this interactive attraction is one of the most enjoyable stops for families. Your kids can taste five different Gouda cheese varieties, from young and creamy to extra-mature and crumbly, plus flavoured types like truffle and cumin. Cheese platters and sandwiches are available if they want to turn the tasting into lunch.
De Roode Leeuw Windmill
Built in 1727, the Red Lion windmill offers tours of milling history that are surprisingly engaging for curious kids. You can also spot 't Slot Mill along the canals during a walk. Gouda's windmills add that classic Dutch countryside feeling without needing to leave the city.
Fresh Stroopwafels and Pannenkoe
Stroopwafels were invented in Gouda, and eating one fresh from a historic shop is a must for every family. For a proper meal, head to Pannenkoe on Karnemelksloot 1, one of the oldest pancake restaurants in the Netherlands, operating since 1840. Watch the pancakes being made on traditional copper griddles and let the kids choose between sweet and savoury toppings.
Goudse Waag and Museum Gouda
The Goudse Waag, a 1668 weighing house on Markt Square, now operates as a museum covering cheese history and crafts. If your family wants more depth, Museum Gouda is housed in a 14th-century hospice and holds Dutch Golden Age art, pottery, altarpieces, and historic gardens. Both are compact enough to keep attention spans intact.

Stroopwafels were born here
The stroopwafel, that iconic caramel-filled waffle cookie loved around the world, was invented right here in Gouda. The city takes its sweet invention seriously, and you can still find them made fresh in historic shops.

The Gouda Stadhuis was built in 1449, more than 40 years before Columbus sailed to the Americas. Its carillon puppet show still reenacts the moment Gouda received its city charter back in 1272, every single hour.
