Salou with kids: theme parks, beaches and Catalan coast

Walk the seafront at dusk when the illuminated fountains ignite and the 16th-century tower glows against the darkening sea, then you'll understand why families keep choosing Salou.

— San & Jo

Salou is one of those places that just works for families. Tucked along the Costa Dorada in Catalonia, this lively coastal town combines over 3km of Blue Flag beaches with the pull of PortAventura World, one of Spain's most iconic theme parks. Whether your kids want to splash in the sea, scream on a roller coaster, or lick an ice cream on a palm-lined promenade, Salou has it all within easy reach.

But there is more to Salou than the big attractions. Stroll along the Paseo de Les Palmeres and you will find a 16th-century tower, a statue honouring a medieval king, and dazzling illuminated fountains lighting up the seafront after dark. The town has genuine history woven into its resort energy, and that mix makes it surprisingly rich for curious families.

Peak summer is buzzy and full-on, with crowded beaches and a party atmosphere in the evenings. If your family prefers a quieter pace, the shoulder months of May, June, and September offer warm weather, calmer beaches, and shorter queues at the parks. Either way, Salou rewards families who come ready to explore beyond the sunlounger.

Best things to do

Best things to do in Salou

PortAventura World and Ferrari Land

This is the big one. PortAventura World packs six themed worlds, serious roller coasters, and water slides into one enormous resort. Right next door, Ferrari Land brings high-speed thrills and Ferrari-themed rides for those who want to push it even further. It's the kind of place that creates lasting memories.

Llevant Beach and the Blue Flag coastline

Salou's beaches are genuinely lovely. Llevant Beach stretches along the palm-lined promenade with wide golden sands and calm, clear water. The whole coastline holds Blue Flag status, which means clean water and good facilities. Younger kids will love the shallow entry and the easy access to beach bars and toilets nearby.

Half day to full day

Camí de Ronda coastal walk

This 9km scenic coastal path winds past viewpoints, hidden coves like Cala Crancs and Capellans Beach, and lighthouse vistas. You do not have to walk the whole thing: pick a section that suits your family and turn back when the little legs start to complain. The views are genuinely stunning.

The stretch near Capellans Beach is shorter and great for families with younger children
1 to 3 hours

Font Lluminosa illuminated fountain show

Every evening on the seafront promenade, the Font Lluminosa puts on a free light-and-music show that kids absolutely love. It is colourful, dramatic, and completely free. A perfect way to wind down after a beach day without spending a thing.

Grab a gelato from a nearby kiosk and watch from the promenade wall for the best view
30 to 45 minutes

Parc Sama: peacocks, ponds, and tropical gardens

Just outside Salou, this 14-hectare garden oasis is a lovely contrast to the resort bustle. Peacocks and parrots roam freely, there are romantic bridges over ponds, and the lush grounds feel like a world away from the beach crowds. Kids who love animals and nature will be completely enchanted.

Bring snacks and make a slow morning of it: the garden is best explored without rushing
1.5 to 2 hours

Torre Vella: Salou's 16th-century tower

Right in the heart of town, this historic tower dates back to the 16th century and now houses a small museum with cultural exhibits. It is a great way to give your trip a little history without spending a full afternoon. Kids enjoy the architecture and the story of the medieval port that once stood nearby.

Combine it with a walk to the King Jaume I statue on the promenade for a mini history trail
45 to 60 minutes

Salou Botanical Garden

Spread across nearly two hectares, the Botanical Garden is home to more than 400 exotic plant and tree species. Water channels inspired by traditional rural irrigation systems run through the grounds, giving it a calm, almost otherworldly feel. A peaceful stop for families who want a break from the beach.

Great for a quiet morning visit before the heat of the afternoon sets in

Our verdict

How Salou scores for families

Kids

Between PortAventura World, Ferrari Land, Blue Flag beaches, and the illuminated fountains, Salou ranks among Spain's most complete family resort destinations. Activities suit every age and energy level.

Culture

More than you might expect from a beach resort. The Torre Vella, the King Jaume I statue, the Botanical Garden, and the Catalan food scene give families real cultural depth alongside the sun and sand.

Food

Mediterranean and Catalan cuisine at its best, from fresh paella and fideuà to tapas and pa amb tomàquet. Plenty of family-friendly restaurants, and even a couple of MICHELIN-recognised spots if you fancy a special dinner.

Nature

The Camí de Ronda coastal path, Parc Sama, and the Botanical Garden offer lovely natural escapes. The protected cape and golden coves add to the appeal, though the resort setting means it is not a wilderness destination.

Budget

Mid-range overall. Beaches and the promenade are free, but PortAventura World and Ferrari Land are a significant spend. Eating out is affordable if you stick to local tapas bars and avoid the tourist-trap menus.

Fun facts

Things to know about Salou

A fleet sailed from this very beach

In 1229, King Jaume I of Aragon set sail from Salou's port with an entire fleet to conquer the Balearic Islands and create the Kingdom of Majorca. There is a statue of him on the promenade to mark the spot. History literally happened right where your kids are building sandcastles.

Salou was a movie star

The Dutch film Costa! and the television series of the same name were both filmed right here in Salou. If your family enjoys spotting filming locations, the town's promenade and beach scenes will look very familiar.

Peacocks roam free nearby

At Parc Sama, just outside Salou, peacocks and parrots wander the grounds completely freely among the tropical trees and ponds. It's one of those unexpected surprises that makes a holiday special, especially for younger kids who have never seen a peacock up close.

Taste Salou

What to eat in Salou with your family

Paella

Must try

La Goleta

The classic Spanish rice dish cooked with seafood, meat, or vegetables is a staple across Salou's restaurants. Fresh, filling, and made to share: it is a perfect family meal after a long beach day.

Fideuà

Local favourite

La Goleta

Think paella, but made with pasta instead of rice. This Catalan favourite is slightly less well-known than its famous cousin, which makes ordering it feel like a proper local discovery. Kids who love pasta tend to take to it immediately.

Pa amb tomàquet

Kids love it

Deliranto

Bread rubbed with ripe tomato and drizzled with olive oil. Simple, honest, and absolutely delicious. It arrives on almost every table in Catalonia as a starter or side, and most kids love it from the very first bite.

Tapas spread

Safe choice

La Morera de Pablo & Ester

Patatas bravas, grilled vegetables, fried squid rings, shrimp, and salted anchovies: ordering a spread of tapas to share is one of the best ways to eat in Salou. It keeps everyone happy and lets even the pickiest eaters find something they enjoy.

Modern Catalan tasting menu

Must try

Deliranto

If you fancy a special dinner without the kids (or with older ones who are up for an adventure), both Deliranto and La Morera de Pablo and Ester are MICHELIN-recognised and offer innovative takes on local Catalan cuisine using the freshest regional ingredients.
