San Sebastián with kids: beaches, pintxos, and a retro funicular

Watch families order pintxos at standing-room bars, then swim in La Concha before dinner. San Sebastián makes this look normal.

— San & Jo

San Sebastián is one of those rare places that works brilliantly for every member of the family. Built around the sweeping Bay of La Concha, the city unfolds along one of Europe's most beautiful urban waterfronts, with golden beaches, a lively promenade, and two mountains bookending the whole scene. The mountains are perfect for exploring.

The city punches well above its weight. With a population of under 200,000, San Sebastián offers the cultural richness of a major European capital, a world-famous food scene built around pintxos bars and Michelin-starred restaurants, and enough outdoor adventure to fill a long weekend. The Old Town alone could keep you busy for a full day, wandering narrow streets, popping into bars, and discovering hidden squares.

Yes, the food culture here is genuinely extraordinary, and children love it too. Pintxos are essentially fancy snacks eaten standing up at a bar counter, which turns every meal into an adventure. Pair that with a retro amusement park on a mountaintop, an aquarium with a walk-through tunnel, and a beach perfect for building sandcastles, and you have a city that earns its place on any family travel list.

Best things to do

Best things to do in San Sebastián / Donostia

La Concha Beach and the Paseo

La Concha is the heart of San Sebastián and one of the most beautiful urban beaches in Europe. The sheltered bay makes it calm enough for paddling and sandcastles, while the pedestrianised Paseo de la Concha promenade runs the full length of the beach, lined with sculptures, street entertainers, and a carousel. It is genuinely lovely for a family stroll at any time of day.

Half day or more

Monte Igueldo Funicular and Amusement Park

One of Spain's oldest preserved funiculars, running since 1912, carries you up to the summit of Monte Igueldo for sweeping views over the Basque coast. At the top sits a wonderfully retro amusement park with historic rides that feel like a step back in time. Kids tend to love the quirky old-fashioned atmosphere as much as the rides themselves.

Check opening days in advance as the park has seasonal hours
2 to 3 hours

San Sebastián Aquarium

Sitting right on the harbour, the aquarium features marine life from the Bay of Biscay and a large Oceanarium tank. The highlight for most kids is the 360-degree walk-through tunnel, where rays and sharks glide overhead. It is a great option if the weather turns or you need a quieter few hours mid-trip.

Book tickets online to avoid queues, especially in July and August
1.5 to 2 hours

Monte Urgull Walk and Views

Monte Urgull rises directly behind the Old Town, and a network of winding paths leads you past old ruins and fortifications up to a giant Christ statue at the summit. The views over the city, bay, and ocean are spectacular, and the walk itself is genuinely enjoyable. There is also a small museum near the top for families who want a bit of history with their panorama.

The paths can be steep in places, so comfortable shoes are a must
2 to 3 hours

Pintxos bar-hopping in the Parte Vieja

The Old Town is the epicentre of San Sebastián's legendary food culture, packed with bars serving pintxos from simple bites to elaborate culinary creations. The social tradition of moving from bar to bar, picking one or two small plates at each stop, turns eating into an event the whole family can enjoy. Kids tend to love the freedom to point at what looks good.

1.5 to 2 hours

Peine del Viento (Comb of the Wind)

At the far western end of La Concha, where the city meets the open ocean, Eduardo Chillida's dramatic iron sculptures are embedded into the rocks at the water's edge. Waves crash against them and, on rougher days, water jets up through holes in the rock platform. It is a genuinely exciting and beautiful spot, with views back across the city and mountains.

30 to 45 minutes

Parque de Cristina Enea

If your family needs a breather from the beach and the buzz of the Old Town, this peaceful park beside the Urumea River is a local favourite. There are walking trails, a duck pond, and plenty of space for kids to run around. It has a very different, quieter energy to the rest of the city and is perfect for a relaxed afternoon.

Our verdict

How San Sebastián scores for families

Kids

Three beaches, a retro funicular, an aquarium with a walk-through tunnel, and a promenade with a carousel. San Sebastián keeps kids genuinely entertained without trying too hard.

Culture

The Old Town, the San Telmo Museoa, dramatic public art, Belle Époque architecture, and a world-class film festival. The cultural depth here is remarkable for a city this size.

Food

One of the great food cities of the world, full stop. The pintxos culture is accessible and fun for families, and even picky eaters usually find something they love at the bar counter.

Nature

Two mountains to climb, three beaches, a river park, and the dramatic Basque coastline all within easy reach. Nature is woven into the city rather than sitting outside it.

Budget

San Sebastián is not cheap. Pintxos bars offer excellent value, but accommodation and dining at restaurants can add up quickly, especially in summer.

Fun facts

Things to know about San Sebastián / Donostia

The original pintxo was invented here

La Gilda, a simple skewer of anchovy, pickled pepper, and olive, was created in San Sebastián around 1946 and is considered the very first pintxo. Every pintxos bar in the world traces its roots back to this city.

A queen made it famous

From 1885, Queen Maria Cristina spent every summer at the Miramar Palace overlooking La Concha Bay, turning San Sebastián into the most fashionable royal resort in Spain. The palace still stands at the edge of the beach today.

Home to Spain's oldest jazz festival

Jazzaldia, held every July, is the oldest jazz festival in Spain and draws top performers from around the world. The city has been swinging to live music every summer for decades, and some concerts are free and held right on the beach.

Taste San Sebastián

What to eat with your family in San Sebastián

Pintxos

Must try

Borda Berri, Ganbara, Bar Nestor

Small bites served on bread or skewers, ranging from a simple slice of tortilla to elaborate creations with foie gras or spider crab. Eaten standing at the bar, one or two per stop, as you work your way through the Old Town. This is how San Sebastián eats, and it is a brilliant format for families.

Tortilla de patatas

Kids love it

Bar Nestor

The Spanish potato omelette is elevated to an art form in San Sebastián. Bar Nestor's version is legendary, but you must pre-order it by phone in the morning. Rich, custardy, and deeply satisfying, it is also one of the most kid-friendly things on any bar counter.

Txuleta (Basque steak)

Local favourite

Casa Urola

A thick, bone-in steak from Basque-reared cattle, cooked simply over charcoal and served with nothing more than salt. It is the kind of food that makes you wonder why you ever complicated a steak. Older kids who eat meat tend to be very happy with this one.

Txangurro a la donostiarra

Must try

Ganbara

Baked stuffed spider crab with garlic, butter, cognac, and leeks, served back in its own shell. This is a signature dish of San Sebastián and a genuine taste of the Basque coast. Worth trying at least once, even if adventurous eating is not usually your family's thing.

Txakoli

Local favourite

Any pintxos bar in the Parte Vieja

A light, slightly sparkling Basque white wine poured from a height to aerate it, creating a small theatrical moment at every bar. It is the default drink with pintxos and pairs perfectly with seafood. Ask for a glass and watch the bartender pour it with a flourish.
