Seville with kids: palaces, cathedrals and orange trees

Watch for Game of Thrones street corners, then duck into María Luisa Park where your kids can finally run. Seville rewards both the sightseers and the wanderers.

— San & Jo

Seville is one of those cities that genuinely stops you in your tracks. The Real Alcázar is absolutely stunning, the Cathedral towers over everything like something from another era, and the narrow alleys of the old Jewish quarter feel like a maze waiting to be explored. If your kids have ever watched Game of Thrones, they will recognise the streets immediately.

What makes Seville work so well for families is the mix of big wow moments and easy, relaxed wandering. You can spend a morning exploring a UNESCO World Heritage palace, then cool off with gazpacho at a shaded tapas bar, then let the kids loose in the vast María Luisa Park. The city has a rhythm that feels surprisingly unhurried for somewhere so historically significant.

Seville is the capital of Andalusia and one of Spain's most important cities, with a history that stretches from Moorish rule to the Age of Exploration. That depth of history is visible on every corner, and it makes for a destination that rewards curiosity at every age.

Real Alcázar

This stunning palace complex is a living mix of Moorish, Gothic, and Renaissance architecture, and its lush gardens are perfect for kids to run around in. Game of Thrones fans will recognise it instantly as the Water Gardens of Dorne. Give yourself at least 90 minutes to do it justice.

Seville Cathedral and La Giralda

The world's largest Gothic cathedral is genuinely jaw-dropping. The highlight for kids is climbing La Giralda, the former Moorish minaret turned bell tower, via a wide ramp rather than stairs. The views over the city from the top make the climb very much worth it.

Barrio Santa Cruz

Seville's historic Jewish quarter is a beautiful tangle of whitewashed alleys, orange trees, and hidden squares. There is no agenda here, just wandering. Kids love the maze-like feel, and it is a wonderful area to stumble upon a shaded courtyard and rest your feet.

Plaza de España

Built for the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition, this sweeping plaza is one of the most photogenic spots in all of Spain. The 52 ceramic-tiled benches each represent a different Spanish province, and the canal running around the edge has rowboats for hire. Kids absolutely love it here.

María Luisa Park

Seville's largest park sits right next to Plaza de España and is the city's green breathing space. Locals come here at weekends to walk, cycle, and relax in the shade. It is a great spot to let younger children run free after a morning of monuments.

Torre del Oro and the Guadalquivir Riverfront

The 13th-century Tower of Gold sits right on the river and now houses a small maritime museum. The riverside walk along the Guadalquivir is flat, stroller-friendly, and a lovely way to connect the different parts of the city. The Magellan-Elcano Expedition set sail from this very river in 1519.

Metropol Parasol (Las Setas)

One of the world's largest wooden structures, this extraordinary modern landmark rises above the old city like a giant mushroom. The elevated walkway offers panoramic views over Seville's rooftops and is a great contrast to all the historic architecture. Kids find the structure genuinely fascinating.

Our verdict

How Seville scores for families

Kids

Palaces, rowboats, ramps instead of stairs, and Game of Thrones filming locations. Seville has plenty of genuine wow moments that land with children of all ages.

Culture

Three UNESCO World Heritage Sites in one city centre, plus centuries of Moorish and Christian history layered into every street. The cultural depth here is extraordinary.

Food

Tapas culture was born here, and the variety is excellent. Most tapas bars are relaxed and welcoming for families, though very young children may find the bar-counter format a little less comfortable.

Nature

The city parks and riverside walks are lovely, but Seville is primarily an urban destination. For proper nature, you will need to head out to the surrounding Andalusian countryside.

Budget

Seville is good value by Western European standards, especially for food and drink. Entry to the major monuments adds up, so plan your priorities before you go.

Fun facts

Things to know about Seville

The first trip around the world started here

In 1519, the Magellan-Elcano Expedition set sail from Seville down the Guadalquivir River on the very first voyage to circumnavigate the entire globe. It took nearly three years to complete.

Game of Thrones was filmed right here

The Real Alcázar and its gardens were used as the Water Gardens of Dorne in Game of Thrones. Walking through the palace, you can point out exactly which scenes were filmed in which rooms and courtyards.

The bell tower has a ramp, not stairs

La Giralda, Seville's famous bell tower, was originally a Moorish minaret. Instead of stairs, it has a series of wide ramps all the way to the top. Legend has it this was so the muezzin could ride his horse up to call the faithful to prayer.
