Porto Cervo with your family: glamour, beaches, and Sardinian soul

Where turquoise water meets designer boutiques and ancient granite rocks.

— San & Jo

Porto Cervo is unlike anywhere else your family will ever visit. This purpose-built luxury resort village sits at the heart of Sardinia's Costa Smeralda, and from the moment you arrive, the emerald water, wind-sculpted granite cliffs, and elegant marina make it clear you're somewhere truly special. It was dreamed up in the 1960s by Prince Karim Aga Khan IV, and the architects he commissioned created a village with a unique pseudo-Moorish style that blends Greek, North African, Spanish, and Italian influences into something that feels completely its own.

Yes, Porto Cervo has a reputation as a billionaires' playground, and you will absolutely spot superyachts and designer labels around every corner. But there is so much more here for families. The beaches surrounding Porto Cervo, including Principe, Capriccioli, and Romazzino, rank among Sardinia's finest, with crystal-clear water that genuinely rivals the Caribbean. The food scene celebrates fresh Sardinian seafood and traditional dishes your kids will talk about for years.

Use Porto Cervo as your base and you have access to boat trips to the Maddalena Archipelago, day trips to Tavolara Island, a world-class golf course, and the charming mountain village of San Pantaleo just a short drive away. There is a relaxed, sun-soaked rhythm to life here that makes it easy to slow down and enjoy the moment together as a family.

Our verdict

How Porto Cervo scores for families

Kids

The beaches and boat trips are world-class for families. The village itself is more geared towards adult luxury, but children with a sense of adventure will love the marina, the water, and the island excursions.

Culture

The unique pseudo-Moorish architecture, the Chiesa di Stella Maris, and the fascinating story of how this village was created from scratch in the 1960s give Porto Cervo genuine cultural depth beneath the glamour.

Food

Sardinian cuisine is genuinely delicious and family-friendly, from fresh seafood to stuffed pasta and honey-drizzled pastries. The marina restaurants are pricey but there are more accessible options in the village.

Fun facts

Things about Porto Cervo your kids will love to know

Built by a prince

Porto Cervo did not exist before the 1960s. Prince Karim Aga Khan IV fell in love with this stretch of Sardinian coastline and commissioned a team of architects to build an entire village from scratch. He wanted it to look like it had always been there, blending naturally into the rocks and landscape.

A sea that looks like the Caribbean

The water around Porto Cervo is so clear and so intensely turquoise that visitors regularly compare it to the Caribbean. The colour comes from the white sandy seabed and the particular quality of light on Sardinia's northeastern coast. It is genuinely one of the most beautiful stretches of sea in all of Europe.

Golf with a view of the sea

The Pevero Golf Course near Porto Cervo is not just beautiful, it is historically significant. Designed by legendary American architect Robert Trent Jones, it hosted the Italian Open back in 1978. Players tee off with panoramic views of the Costa Smeralda stretching out below them.
