Your family guide
“Fewer crowds, more magic: Praiano is the Amalfi Coast the way it used to be.”
— San & Jo
Praiano is one of those rare places that still feels like a genuine discovery. Tucked onto dramatic cliffs halfway between Positano and Amalfi, this small fishing village offers your family the full Amalfi Coast experience, turquoise water, fresh seafood, jaw-dropping views, without the shoulder-to-shoulder crowds of its more famous neighbours.
The town is built vertically, with steep staircases weaving between whitewashed houses, a beautiful 15th-century church, and tiny pebbly coves far below. Yes, you will climb stairs. Pack comfortable shoes and embrace it, because every step leads somewhere worth seeing. Kids tend to love the adventure of it, and the views from the top are genuinely unforgettable.
What makes Praiano special for families is its pace. Life here moves slowly and authentically. You can spend a morning swimming in a cliffside cove, share a long lunch of lemon pasta and grilled fish, and watch the sun set over Capri from the piazza. That kind of unhurried rhythm is exactly what family holidays are made for.
Best things to do
Marina di Praia
This tiny pebbly cove tucked into a cliffside is one of the most charming beaches on the whole Amalfi Coast. You reach it via a staircase, which adds to the sense of discovery. The water is calm and clear, there are seafood restaurants right on the shore, and the atmosphere is wonderfully relaxed. It feels like a secret even in summer.
La Gavitella beach
Praiano's most central beach sits in a scenic cove with views of the medieval Torre a Mare watchtower rising from the sea. Beach clubs here offer sunbeds and shade, which is a real bonus for families with younger children. The views of Capri on a clear day are stunning, and the water is perfect for swimming.
Chiesa di San Gennaro
This 15th-century church sits at the heart of Praiano's main piazza and is worth stepping inside for its extraordinary hand-painted majolica-tiled dome. Kids are often mesmerised by the intricate patterns. The piazza itself is a lovely spot to sit, have a gelato, and watch village life unfold around you.
Luminaria di San Domenico festival
If you can time your visit for late July or early August, this festival is genuinely magical. Thousands of candles are lit around the piazza and church, creating an atmosphere unlike anything else on the coast. It is free, it is local, and children absolutely love the spectacle of it.
Path of the Gods
The Sentiero degli Dei is one of the most iconic hikes in southern Italy, and it starts from Praiano's heights. The trail is strenuous and involves significant elevation, so it is best suited to older children and families who are comfortable with challenging terrain. The panoramic views of the Amalfi Coast are extraordinary and absolutely worth the effort.
Sentiero dell'Amore to Furore
For families who want a scenic walk without the strenuous climb of the Path of the Gods, this easier coastal path links Praiano to the village of Furore and the photogenic Fiordo di Furore cove. The views are beautiful and the walk is far more manageable for younger children.
Boat tours along the coast
Hopping on a boat from Praiano is one of the best things you can do with your family here. You can explore hidden sea caves, go snorkelling in crystal-clear water, and see the dramatic rock formations of the coastline from a completely different perspective. Kids of all ages love being out on the water.
Ceramics shopping
Praiano has a lovely tradition of hand-painted Amalfi Coast ceramics, and picking up a piece from one of the local shops makes for a genuinely meaningful souvenir. The colourful lemon and fish designs are a hit with kids, and watching artisans at work is a memorable experience in itself.
Our verdict
Kids
The beaches, boat trips, and festival atmosphere are brilliant for children. The steep staircases require some planning with very young kids or strollers, but older children thrive here.
Culture
A beautiful 15th-century church, a living ceramics tradition, and centuries of fishing and silk-making history give Praiano real cultural depth for a small village.
Food
Fresh seafood, lemon pasta, and the best limoncello you will ever taste. The food scene here is outstanding and genuinely family-friendly across most restaurants.
Nature
Dramatic cliffs, turquoise coves, coastal hiking trails, and views of Capri. The natural setting is spectacular, though the terrain is challenging for very young children.
Budget
The Amalfi Coast is not cheap, and Praiano is no exception. That said, it is noticeably more affordable than Positano, and eating at local trattorias keeps costs reasonable.

Fun facts
A royal holiday retreat
Praiano has been a holiday destination since the Middle Ages, when it was a favourite retreat of the Duchy of Amalfi. It was also an important silk production centre, which made it surprisingly wealthy and influential for such a small village.
The lemon that changed everything
The Sfusato Amalfitano lemon grown along this coastline is unlike any other lemon in the world. It is larger, sweeter, and more fragrant than standard lemons, and it is the secret behind the incredible pasta al limone and limoncello you will taste in Praiano. Kids love hearing that a lemon can be this special.
Capri is closer than you think
On a clear day, you can see the island of Capri from Praiano's beaches and clifftops. The island sits just across the water, and spotting it from the shore feels like a little geography lesson with a view. Many families use Praiano as a base for a day trip to Capri by boat.
