Your family guide
“D-Day beaches, prehistoric stones and salted butter at every meal. Two regions that make French history stick.”
— San & Jo
If your family loves the feeling of standing somewhere that genuinely matters, northwest France will stop you in your tracks. Normandy and Brittany sit side by side along the Atlantic coast, and together they pack in medieval abbeys, prehistoric standing stones, dramatic chalk cliffs, and some of the most beautiful sandy beaches in Europe. This is the kind of place where history does not feel like a school lesson: it feels alive.
Normandy carries a quiet, elegant weight. You can walk the D-Day beaches, look up at the Gothic spires of Rouen, and watch Mont-Saint-Michel emerge from the morning mist across the bay. Brittany has a wilder, more rugged edge: granite coastlines, misty moors, ancient forests, and villages where locals still dance to Celtic bagpipes on summer evenings. Both regions reward families who like to slow down and actually explore.
The best part? You can road-trip between the highlights with ease. Étretat, Honfleur, Mont-Saint-Michel, Saint-Malo, and Dinan are all connected by scenic coastal routes that make the journey just as enjoyable as the destination. Pack a good playlist, load up on buckwheat galettes and Camembert, and let northwest France show you what it's got.

What makes it special
History that sticks with children
From the 70-metre Bayeux Tapestry to the tidal island abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel, the medieval streets of Dinan, and the solemn D-Day beaches, this region turns history into something you feel rather than just read about.
Coastlines that take your breath away
The chalk arches of Étretat rise 90 metres above the sea. The Pink Granite Coast glows at sunset. Brittany's tidal bays shift and shimmer with every hour. Northwest France has some of the most dramatic coastal scenery in all of Europe.
Wild nature just off the beaten path
Beyond the beaches, Brittany's Brocéliande forest feels genuinely enchanted, the Monts d'Arrée moorlands are hauntingly beautiful, and the Crozon Peninsula offers coastal hikes that will tire out even the most energetic kids.
Food culture the whole family can get into
Crêpes and galettes for lunch, fluffy Mont-Saint-Michel omelettes, Camembert straight from the farm, and kouign-amann pastry still warm from the oven. Eating your way through these two regions is genuinely one of the highlights of any trip.
A road trip made for families
The scenic coastal route connecting Étretat, Honfleur, Mont-Saint-Michel, Saint-Malo, and Dinan is one of the great family road trips in Europe. Every stop has something new, and the drives in between are beautiful enough to keep everyone looking out the window.
Your kind of holiday
History and heritage explorers
This is one of the richest regions in Europe for living, walkable history. The Bayeux Tapestry, D-Day memorials, Rouen's Gothic cathedral, the Carnac megaliths, and Mont-Saint-Michel give your family a genuine sense of the past at every stop.
Beach and coastal adventure
From the golden sands of Deauville to the wild granite coves of Brittany's Pink Granite Coast, there is a beach here for every kind of family. Add coastal hikes, dramatic tidal watching at Mont-Saint-Michel, and rockpooling on Brittany's Atlantic shores.
Active families and nature lovers
Cycle the Cider Road through Normandy's apple orchards, hike the Crozon Peninsula, explore the Brière Natural Park by canoe, or walk the misty trails of the Monts d'Arrée. This region rewards families who like to move and breathe fresh Atlantic air.
Did you know?
The Bayeux Tapestry is older than your school
The Bayeux Tapestry is nearly 70 metres long and was created around 1070 AD. It tells the story of the Norman Conquest of England like a giant comic strip, with battles, ships, and even Halley's Comet stitched into the cloth.
Brittany has stones older than the pyramids
The megalithic standing stones near Carnac in Brittany were erected around 4500 BC, making them older than Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids. Nobody knows exactly why thousands of stones were arranged in long rows across the landscape.
Mont-Saint-Michel has extreme tides
The tides around Mont-Saint-Michel are among the most dramatic in Europe, rising and falling up to 14 metres. At high tide, the island is completely surrounded by water. At low tide, you can walk across the sand to reach it.
Taste Normandy and Brittany
Buckwheat galette (blé noir)
Brittany's signature savoury crêpe made from buckwheat flour and traditionally filled with ham, melted cheese, and a fried egg. Known as the 'complet', it is a filling, fuss-free meal that kids almost always love, especially paired with a glass of cold apple cider.
Kouign-amann
Brittany's most iconic baked treat is a buttery, caramelised pastry that originated in the town of Douarnenez. The name means 'butter cake' in Breton, and one bite will tell you exactly why it has become famous far beyond the region.
Omelette de la Mère Poulard
This famous fluffy omelette has been made at Mont-Saint-Michel for over a century. It is beaten vigorously and cooked in a long-handled pan over an open fire, resulting in something between an omelette and a soufflé. A fun and memorable meal right on the island.
Camembert de Normandie
One of four AOP-protected cheeses from Normandy, Camembert is soft, creamy, and made from raw milk. Pick one up at a local market and eat it with crusty bread. It is one of those simple pleasures that makes a family picnic in Normandy feel genuinely special.
Crêpes with salted butter and caramel
Brittany's salted butter caramel crêpe is a daily treat you will find at every crêperie across the region. Brittany's love of salted butter is legendary, and once you taste it drizzled over a warm crêpe, you will understand why.
