Your family guide
“Stand close enough to feel the mist. The power of Niagara speaks for itself.”
— San & Jo
Niagara Falls is one of those rare destinations that genuinely lives up to the hype. The thundering roar of Horseshoe Falls, the wall of mist rising into the sky, and the sheer scale of the water rushing past you: it hits differently in person, and children feel it too. This is the kind of place that creates real family memories, not just nice photos.
The Canadian side gives you the best seat in the house. You get panoramic, front-on views of Horseshoe Falls, and from here you can get remarkably close to the action: whether that means boarding a boat into the mist, descending through 130-year-old tunnels behind the falls, or watching the whole spectacle light up in colour after dark. Active families will find plenty to push their limits, from a zipline ride directly into the mist to a boardwalk running alongside Class 6 rapids.
Beyond the falls themselves, Niagara is a full-on family destination. Clifton Hill brings the carnival energy with go-karts, a giant SkyWheel, and endless entertainment. The surrounding Niagara region adds orchards, farm markets, and some genuinely great food. Plan for at least two days so you can take it all in without rushing.
Best things to do
Niagara City Cruises: Voyage to the Falls
This is the one you cannot skip. The boat takes you right into the mist of Horseshoe Falls, close enough to drench you from head to toe. Ponchos are provided, but expect to get wet anyway. Kids absolutely love it, and the scale of the falls from water level is genuinely jaw-dropping.
Journey Behind the Falls
A lift takes you down through tunnels carved 130 years ago, leading to observation portals right behind the curtain of Horseshoe Falls. The noise and vibration are intense in the best possible way. It is a completely unique perspective on the falls that you simply cannot get from the surface.
Zipline to the Falls
A high-speed zipline ride that sends you soaring directly toward the mist of the falls. It is fast, loud, and absolutely exhilarating. Check minimum height and age requirements before you go, as not all family members may be able to ride together.
White Water Walk
A boardwalk running alongside the Niagara River Gorge where Class 6 rapids churn just metres away from your feet. The raw power of the water here is something else entirely. It is a quieter experience than the main falls area but genuinely impressive, and the walk itself is easy for most ages.
Whirlpool Aero Car
A historic cable car that carries you approximately 3,500 feet over the Niagara Whirlpool, with dramatic views of the river gorge swirling below. It has been running since 1916 and feels wonderfully old-school. Kids who love heights will be completely thrilled.
Clifton Hill entertainment district
Known as the Street of Fun, Clifton Hill is packed with the Niagara SkyWheel, mini-golf, go-karts, wax museums, haunted houses, and 4D rides. It is unashamedly touristy and completely brilliant for kids. Save this for the afternoon when everyone needs a change of pace from the natural wonders.
Niagara Parks Power Station and Tunnel
A restored historic power station with immersive exhibits, glowing turbines, and an underground tunnel 180 feet below the surface. It is a genuinely impressive attraction that older kids especially will find fascinating. The combination of industrial history and dramatic underground spaces makes it stand out from the other falls-focused sites.
Falls illumination light show
Every evening the falls are lit up in sweeping colours including reds, blues, and greens. Watching Horseshoe Falls glow in the dark from the Table Rock viewpoint is one of those moments families talk about for years. It is completely free to watch from the public viewing areas along the parkway.
Our verdict
Kids
Between the boat rides, zipline, Clifton Hill, and the sheer spectacle of the falls, kids are completely catered for at every turn.
Nature
The falls and gorge are world-class natural wonders. The Niagara Glen Nature Reserve adds a quieter, wilder side to the visit.
Food
Solid options from casual poutine spots to falls-view dining. Local Niagara produce and ice wine make the food scene more interesting than you might expect.
Adventure
A zipline into the mist, Class 6 rapids at arm's length, a cable car over a whirlpool. Active families will find plenty to get their hearts racing.
Budget
The main attractions add up quickly, especially if you combine the boat tour, tunnel, and Clifton Hill. Plan your budget carefully and look for combo passes.
Planning your visit
1 day
Quick visit
See the falls, take the boat tour, and catch the evening light show. You will hit the highlights but feel rushed.
2 days
Sweet spot
Day one for the falls, boat tour, and tunnels. Day two for Clifton Hill, the Power Station, and the zipline. This is the pace most families enjoy.
3 days
Deep dive
Add the Aero Car, White Water Walk, and a day trip into the Niagara wine region. Perfect if you want to slow down and soak it all in.
Fun facts
The barge that never moved
A steel barge called the Old Scow has been stranded just a few hundred metres above the falls since August 1918. Its crew opened the dumping hatches to stop it going over the edge, and it has sat there ever since. You can still see it from the riverbank today.
Older than Canada itself
The Maid of the Mist boat service, now operating as Niagara City Cruises on the Canadian side, has been running since 1846. That is more than 20 years before Canada even became a country in 1867. Your family is joining a very long tradition.
A gorge full of rare plants
The Niagara Glen Nature Reserve on the Canadian side is home to 14 species of rare plants, some of which are threatened or endangered. The sheltered gorge creates a unique microclimate that lets plants survive here that you would not find anywhere else nearby.

Fries loaded with gravy and squeaky cheese curds. It is messy, filling, and completely delicious. This is the Canadian dish children ask for again before finishing the first portion. Found at casual spots all over the city.

Butter tarts

Sweet, gooey pastries with a buttery filling, often with raisins or nuts inside. These are a beloved Canadian treat and a genuine local speciality. Pick some up from a local bakery and hand them out as an afternoon snack while you walk the parkway.
Niagara ice wine and regional cheese
Must tryWeinkeller
Ice wine is made from grapes that freeze on the vine in the Niagara region's cold winters, producing an intensely sweet dessert wine. The local cheese and chocolate pairings at nearby wineries make for a lovely afternoon stop if you have older children in tow.

Safe choiceOld Stone Inn Boutique Hotel Restaurant
