Your family guide
“Belle époque charm, wide sandy beaches and fresh mussels. Ostend does seaside the Belgian way.”
— San & Jo
Ostend is the kind of place that earns a spot in your family's regular rotation. Belgium's premier coastal city sits right on the North Sea, offering your kids a wide sandy beach, a harbour full of ships, and an aquarium to explore when the weather turns grey. It is a proper beach holiday with enough going on to keep everyone happy.
What makes Ostend stand out is the mix. You get the classic seaside experience: building sandcastles on the beach, eating fries on the promenade, and renting a rosalie pedal car along the Royal Galleries. But you also get a city with real depth, from a fortress built by Napoleon to an open-air museum of wartime trenches. There is always something new to discover.
The pace here is relaxed and welcoming. Locals are used to families, the seafront is easy to navigate with a pushchair, and the coastal tram gives you a simple way to explore nearby villages without the stress of driving. Ostend rewards you for slowing down and just enjoying it.
Best things to do
The beach and Klein Strand
Ostend's wide sandy beach is the heart of any family visit. Klein Strand is a calmer section that works beautifully for younger children, with shallow water and plenty of space to spread out. Pack a windbreak, grab some fries, and let the kids run.
North Sea Aquarium
A compact but genuinely engaging aquarium showcasing the marine life of the North Sea. Children can see rays, eels, and all sorts of creatures that live just off the beach. A great option for overcast days.
Atlantic Wall Museum and Raversyde Anno 1465
The top-rated attraction in Ostend on TripAdvisor, and for good reason. This open-air museum features two kilometres of preserved WWI and WWII German fortifications, including bunkers and trenches you can actually walk through. Combine it with the neighbouring medieval fishing village recreation at Raversyde Anno 1465 for a full history day out.
Three-Master Mercator
This beautiful historic sailing ship is moored right in Ostend's harbour and now operates as a museum ship. Climbing aboard and exploring the decks gives kids a real sense of adventure, and the harbour setting makes for great photos.
Fort Napoleon
A pentagon-shaped brick fortress built by Napoleon in 1810, complete with a ten-metre moat. It never saw a single battle, which makes it a fascinating talking point for curious kids. The self-guided audio tour makes it easy to explore at your own pace, and the rotating exhibitions add something new each visit.
Rosalie ride along the Royal Galleries
Renting a rosalie, a pedal-powered vehicle, is one of those simple pleasures that makes for lasting memories. The covered Royal Galleries were built by King Leopold II and provide a beautiful backdrop for a leisurely pedal along the seafront promenade.
Maria Hendrika Park
A lovely green escape from the beach crowds, with a pond, a flower clock, and a bandstand that hosts live music performances throughout the summer. Perfect for a picnic or a quiet afternoon when the kids need a change of scenery.
Our verdict
Kids
Sandy beaches, an aquarium, a real fortress, a museum ship, and a pedal car ride. Ostend delivers a brilliant mix of active and educational fun for children of all ages.
Culture
The birthplace of James Ensor, home to Mu.ZEE, and packed with belle époque architecture. Ostend punches well above its weight culturally for a beach resort.
Food
Moules-frites, shrimp croquettes, and fresh North Sea cod make Ostend a genuine foodie destination. Kids tend to love the fries and seafood fritters without any persuasion needed.
Beach
Wide, sandy, and well-maintained. Klein Strand is calm and safe for younger swimmers. This is what Ostend is built around, and it delivers.
Budget
Ostend is not the cheapest Belgian destination, especially in peak summer. That said, the beach is free, many parks cost nothing, and a portion of fries will not break the bank.
